And about time, too!
It’s taken a while, to be honest. And, not being a graphic designer or necessarily someone who’s got the patience or imagination that such a profession warrants, it’s been a sharp learning curve for me over the past few months. Well, since the beginning of February, to be precise.
What with having to get to grips with such timeless classics as vectors and CSS, and trying to figure out the difference between padding and margins, it’s not exactly been a journey I’d describe as “frustration-free”. And don’t even get me started on the mind-numbing minefield that’s SEO.
In fact, never has the phrase “trial and error” been so aptly applied to a project that’s lasted almost four-and-a-half months. To be honest, if it wasn’t for my well-honed ability to swear at myself with regularity, and to have enough common sense to reach for the nearest chilled beer when things got a bit too complicated, then I certainly wouldn’t have got this far.
Nevertheless, after countless days and nights beavering away on my MacBook, both in the calm winter evenings of Northern France and, more recently, in the balmy tropical climes of the British Virgin Islands, the time has come to hit the “Publish” button.
And, on balance, we’re pretty happy with the results!
First of all, you’ll notice that our homepage has gone all “moody” with its combination of blues, stone and dark greys. Yep, that’ll be our new colour scheme.
And then, if you head over to our other pages you’ll be welcomed by a plethora of full-screen photographs and that winning colour scheme combo again.
But the real effort has gone into converting the majority of our back-catalogue of blog posts into our new full-width format. Gone are the sidebars. And gone are the squashed up text-image-text formats. Instead, each post is now introduced with a full-screen image and we’ve allowed much more space for the writing and photographs to “breathe”.
Now, you may be reading this on a smartphone and are thinking “Hang on, Ian – where are all these full-width images you keep harping on about?”. And, of course, you’d be asking an extremely valid question. Well, the truth is they don’t really work on a smartphone’s relatively teeny screen. So we’ve had to compromise a little bit there and continue using our original blog post header images. But you still get our new colour scheme and plenty of other goodies, too so it’s not all bad news, right?
Anyway, let’s not dwell on what’s new and what isn’t. We just wanted to let you know that our makeover’s done and I can now get my life back! There ARE still some more tweaks to do but they’re the sort of thing I should be able to complete before breakfast rather than spend the entire day on them.
And in the meantime, we’d love to know what you think. Good and bad. After all, we’ve made the changes to try and improve your experience on our blog. So please share your thoughts with us in the Comments box below. Especially if you find something that doesn’t work!
In the meantime, we’re off to put some serious work into one of the things we came to the British Virgin Islands for in the first place…
Ian & Nicky.
Hi, we’re Ian and Nicky, an English couple on a voyage of discovery around the world, and this blog is designed to reflect what we see, think and do. Actually, we’d like to think it also provides information, entertainment and inspiration for other “mature” travellers, too. So please feel free to pour yourself a glass of something suitably chilled and take a look around.
